Canada eTA: CAN$7, for flights only
Canada's Electronic Travel Authorization is required to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport for citizens of visa-exempt countries. It costs CAN$7, is usually approved in minutes, and lasts up to five years. It is not needed when you arrive by land or sea.

Plus British overseas territory citizens of Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Falklands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, Saint Helena and the Turks and Caicos, and British Nationals (Overseas). Conditions: Israelis need a national Israeli passport; Romanians an electronic passport; Taiwanese an ordinary passport with the personal identification number; Hong Kong residents an HKSAR passport.
Visa-required countries that can use an eTA
Citizens of these countries normally need a visa, but can get an eTA instead to fly to Canada if they held a Canadian visitor visa in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa (valid on the day they apply):

Indonesia and Malaysia joined this list on 26 May 2026. By car, bus, train or boat these travellers still need a visitor visa.
No eTA needed
- US citizens (carry a valid US passport) and US lawful permanent residents (passport + green card).
- Canadian citizens, dual citizens included, who must use a Canadian passport (American-Canadians may use a US passport), and Canadian permanent residents.
- Holders of a valid Canadian visa.
- Anyone arriving by land or sea.
Applying
- Open the form on canada.ca. It exists only in English and French and cannot be saved, so have the passport, a card and an email address ready.
- Pay CAN$7 (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, JCB, prepaid and debit versions accepted).
- Print the receipt straight away: it cannot be printed later.
- Most answers come by email within minutes. If documents are needed, instructions arrive within 72 hours.
Canada.ca publishes its own warning about eTA scams and paid intermediaries. The official form never asks for more than CAN$7.
Validity
Up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. A new passport needs a new eTA. Expiry reminder.
